Dear People of Sonoma County,

Thank you for coming to our shows.  Thank you for stomping.  Thank you for dreaming us into being.  It has been a grand year.  Together, we have propped up The Pharmakon and have welcomed new artists into our community canopy.  Such sounds.  Such spirit.

Now, we shall be wandering the streets for a month or so, searching for good acoustics as we shape an album out of the things we find.  We’ll return with it between our teeth and we’ll drop it at your feet like a fish.  So be true while we’re away and we’ll meet again another day.

- The Crux

A bunch of Sonoma County artists will be playing at 12 Galaxies in the Mission District tomorrow night.  This is part of a cultural exchange between Sonoma and San Francisco that has been set up by our dear friend and artistic colleague, Mark Growden.

This is a great opportunity for artists in our county and San Francisco to exchange and share.  Here is the lineup:

  • Mark Growden
  • The Crux
  • Bill Wild
  • Chris Wells
  • Joni Davis
  • Leila Anne
  • Hannah Manfreddi
  • Conception Vessel One

Show starts at 9pm.  Get there if you can, because this show will be a big one.  Bite the Hand Productions wants to thank Mark for putting this on cross-pollinating the arts of the Bay Area.  We will be writing more about musical exchange and Mark in the near future, so keep stopping by bitethehand.org!

After the Copwatch Benefit (Friday at the Boogie Room) and a morning show at Aqus Cafe (Saturday morning) the flag-bearers of Bite the Hand Productions, THE CRUX are heading north for a weekend of show in Humboldt County!

This is going to be the first time Bite the Hand has traveled out of Sonoma.  We’re looking forward to meeting new people and telling them about what is going on down here.  We’ll talk about the artists and activists that are coming together, and the community events that we put on.

So wish us luck!  It is going to be a great adventure!

In the city of Petaluma, there is a little cafe called Aqus. This place, tucked on H Street, away from the hustle of downtown, is an amazing hub of community activity! Every Saturday morning, people gather here to listen to music. Aqus hosts films, art shows, knitting groups, discussions, and political forums! They even produce an online newsletter that is rich with community news and contributions! A local business with real heart- CHEERS TO AQUS!

Drop on by at 189 H Street, or check them out at the web at www.aquscafe.com

And this Saturday, the 19th… THE CRUX will be playing at Aqus Cafe in the morning! Come see the official musicians of Bite the Hand Productions at Aqus!

A Successful Event!

On January 31st, The Crux teamed up with Sonoma County Conservation Action’s Know Your Neighbor program to put on a great event at the Rialto Cinemas in Santa Rosa!  The Crux provided tunes, their banjo player (Joshua Stithem) served as emcee for the event, and we even auctioned off a year subscription to The Pharmakon!  Know Your Neighbor had candidates for Santa Rosa City Council make speeches, and showed the amazing film- Baraka!  We made a great team, and about 200 people attended!

This special event is a precursor to some projects that Bite the Hand Productions is preparing to unveil in Spring.  We call them SOUNDINGS and they consist of creative collaboration between local artists and activist groups.  This rendezvous between  The Crux and Know Your Neighbor was only the beginning!

So stay tuned…

Punk

As of late, Bite the Hand Studios has been ground-zero for a number of punk shows. We’re proud to host these men and women.  They are rowdy and respectful, and most of them are always glad to help out.  Bite the Hand Productions has been keeping a good relationship with our local punk collectives, and here’s why:

The punks have a lot of good things going, and the rest of the world would do well to take notes, or better yet- start attending some punk gatherings. What they have is a very tight community that is centered around music. Their “Do It Yourself” (DIY or DIE) ethic is very strong, and they know how to create their own venues in private houses and in public spaces like Doyle Park. They are not satisfied with what they are getting from the establishment, and they have built a counterculture that is standing pretty well on its own.

Bite the Hand Productions wants to see more openness and networking between other local DIY-centered groups and the punks.  All the permaculture activists, all the independent labels, all the grassroots organizers, and all the brave artists in the county can learn something from the punk community- and can teach the punks something, too.  No group is an island, and Bite the Hand Productions is determined to connect the many amazing communities in Sonoma County.

SO… Come on out to a show this weekend featuring The Crux (from Bite the Hand) and the Fistifuks (from the North Bay Pirate Punx). This historic musical meeting between the punks and Bite the Hand Productions will take place on February 2nd at The Boogie Room. Come on down!

In the meantime, here are some websites for more punk-related information:
